Thinking about getting a leopard gecko!

Question
Hi Heather!

I love reptiles and am thinking about getting a leopard gecko, one of my program coordinators recommended it to me as a good first reptile. I already have a glass 10 gallon aquarium, thermometer, and a heating light with a red bulb. I was planning on getting an under-tank heating pad for night, two hide-aways, some logs for decoration, peat moss, a spray bottle for misting, and a water bowl. I already have crickets, as I have a Fire-Belly Toad. I was just wondering what I should use for the bottom of the tank. I have researched it and almost every site says something different. I was just wondering what you thought would be best and what else I would need to get before I got my pet and any other tips on how to keep a leopard gecko!

Thanks!
Flora

Answer
Hi Flora,
Reptile carpet is the safest substrate. Along with papertowels and newspapers. (you might have to double up the papers if you are using the under tank heater)

You will need a dish with calcium powder in it for supplements.

The more hides the better.

Use the peat moss and keep it wet in one of the hides.

Here is a good website for the generall information:

Good luck
