Question
QUESTION: My daughter's toad has a large red sack hanging from it's anus.  Everyday is gets larger (longer) It's been about 3 days now and is now about 1" long.  I believe this is a female toad (we have 4 of them) and don't believe any of them are male.  We have isolated it for now until we know what's wrong.  Can you help?

ANSWER: Hello Debbie,

Oh no!  That would be a prolapse & it is extremely serious.  He needs immediate medical attention.
I don't know what type of prolapse as it could be a intestinal, colon, rectal or a hemepenal prolapse.
What you can do is mix up some sugar in some warm water to dissolve it.  Then, add cool water with that & soak her in that.  The sugar sometimes helps draw fluids out of the area to help reduce swelling in that prolapses area.  Then, use some KY jelly or vaseline to keep the prolapsed area from drying out.

Let me know how she is doing.

QUESTION: What are the chances of the toad surviving this? I cannot afford medical attention right now. We have the toad sitting in sugar water like you said on wet paper towel.  My daughter is devastated, but I want her to know the toad's chances of survival.  Thank you

Answer
Hello Debbie,

Well, to be honest, her chances are not very good.  Anytime an organ prolapses, it has got to be fixed.  The area is going to dry out & become necrotic which will be painful & probably get infected.  This affects her ability to go to the bathroom which in the end, will cause a lot of problems.
Keep trying to get the area to go down in swelling.
Do you know what has caused this?  Do you supplement calcium for the foods for him?  Did it ingest substrate that it cannot pass & had to strain to go to the bathroom?
