QuestionMy daughter has a 10 week old dwarf lop eared bunny, seemingly overnight its left eye has turned white and she seems blind in this eye.
can you please tell me what this is likely to be, the rabbit seems perfectly well and is eating normally.
Thanks
AnswerDear Sue,
Without seeing it, I cannot tell whether this is a corneal ulcer due to trauma or other insult, or an intra-ocular (inside the eyeball) event, such as sudden onset of cataract (due possibly to a parasite known as Encephalitozoon cuniculi, or to glaucoma) or to an intra-ocular abscess.
Any of these except trauma would be pretty uncommon in such a young bunny. But I would definitely get the bunny to a good rabbit vet, whom you can find here:
www.rabbit.org/vets
The vet may need to refer you to a good veterinary ophthalmologist if the condition is treatable. Even though the bunny is acting normal, eye problems can be painful. So please get the bunny to a good vet for a check and diagnosis to prevent the pain from generating other health problems later.
I hope this helps.
