Question
can you tell me what colors of rex you can breed together?  example an opal can be bred with a castor or blue, what other colors go together?

Answer
Melissa..great question... and actually, it is more aa question of what can't you breed together.... I assume you mean what can be bred together to acheive recognized and showable colors?  (Because of course you can breed any colors together but may get some unusual outcomes.) If you are a member of the National Minirex club, for years they published a chart I developed that told what NOT to breed together.  In short, here is a list that will help you...
Very compatible are : Black, Blue, Opal, and Castor. These can be mixed and matched without any repercussions. Torts are also compatible, but only with the blacks. You end up getting fawns (Unrecognized, but are often confused with lynx- even by judges) when you cross them into the Castors. (Don't do it.) Also, Dilute torts (from Blues) are also not recognized, but are often confused with regular torts, even by judges...so Black and Tort are compatible. Choclate and lilac are very compatible, and even Lynx with Lilac and Chocolate..but you will throw Amber (Chocolate Agouti) babies and these are not recognized. A new variety, Otter, is compatible with Chocolate, Black, Blue, Lilac, Castor, and Opal...but the otter won't be 'official' until January, 2006.  Reds are compatible with Torts and Castors, but little else... well, if you are good at genetics, they will be compatible with Chocolate, but you need to know what to manipulate..as Ambers again will come out...  And White is probably compatible with everything..but remember that white is actually not a color. That gene is an eraser..and the actual rabbit colors/genes the white carries can be almost anything except Chinchilla and Seal.  Chinchilla Minirex are not really easily compatible with anything, although some breeders do mix it with castors..That's OK if you are restricting it to just those colors. (There are actually Blacks who are 'Black Chins' but they are are. In almost every case, breeding Black to Chin results in Castors, so that does make the three of them compatible.  Have i confused you enough? Tell me what you are specifically intersted in breeding and i'll tell you what problems you may or may not encounter.  regards, Steve
