How to Breed Tri-color Mini-Rex?

Question
We would like to know how to breed tri-colors. Thanks, Edwin & Debbie

Answer
Well, a small question that could take weeks to answer!  I am not sure if you want to know how to develop them, how to start raising them, what varieties are compatible with them, or how to improve upon them.  Making them involves using the Broken genes (En and en), the Harlequin gene (Ej) and of course the MiniRex (rexing(R+r) and dwarfing(Dw + dw) genes). I suggest that, if you like them, you should purchase some existing breeding stock from breeders who are members of the NMRRC (National MiniRex Club- nmrrc. com). Developing the specific color variety from  existing MiniRex stock is very hard, as there is no accepted 'solid Harlequin' pattern MiniRex to start with in order to add the 3rd color, the white..and the developers crossbred the stock to get the colors. There is very little in the way of compatible MiniRex color varieties, as the Harlequin gene tends to  mess up many other colors (notably putting shadow barring on Castor bellies and legs). While I could write a long article on how to start with Harlequin rabbits (a separate breed that is about 8 pounds (too large) and has normal length fur), and cross into other colors of MiniRex, the process would take you over 3 years, and would take a certain expertise with color genetics. Edwin, if you are a member of ARBA, I suggest you join NMRRC also. If you aren't, you need to join American Rabbit Breeders Association first. I do not know where you live, but if you are interested, and close by, the ARBA national convention is next week Oct. 23-26 in Indianapolis and there will be in excess of 25,000 rabbits there, including some of the best Tri-color MiniRex in the country... Since I do not know your basic knowledge level, I am not sure if I am addressing a beginner who just saw a picture of a Tricolor, or an experienced breeder who wants to know the intricacies of genetic color gene manipulation. If this hasn't addressed your specific need, please re-ask with some details and background and I'll try to be more specific.  Steve
