death of a bonded bunny

Question
Hi,
I have an adopted pair of bonded dwarf bunnies and recently one of them become very ill. We are now faced with the impossible decision of wether or not to have her humanely euthanized. A big concern of mine is the impact it will have on her bonded mate. I only adopted these bunns recently so she has not had much time to accustom herself to me. Is there anything I can do to make it easier for her? Should I try bonding her to a different bunny? I know that there will be no happy outcome in this situation, but I would like to make an informed decision as to what will be best for both bunnies. Thanks so much, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Paige,

Firstly I'm really sorry to hear about your poorly bunny, what is wrong with her?

Death of a partner affects different bunnies in different ways, some will be fine and don't grieve for their partner, others are more extreme and will stop eating and basically leave themselves to die :-(

The best thing for you to do is keep an eye on her after you have to say good bye to her friend.

If she is grieving in an extreme way then you really should look to getting her another friend as soon as possible. The best thing you can do is to make sure she sees the body of her friend, it will help her understand you haven't just taken her away.

If possible let her choose her own friend, theres always a chance she won't bond with any bunny you choose.

Hope this helps, let me know how you get on
