Question -
Could rabbits be in contact with scabies and could a child get them.

Thank you
Answer -
Dear Richard,

Rabbits generally do not carry any species of mites that can be transmitted to an otherwise healthy human.

Dana

Thanks for answering my question DR. Dana, the reason I asked was because my dughter has scapies according to my doctor and I was just wondering if she got them from the rabbit or possibly school. any idea and thanks so much.

Answer
Dear Richard,

Although rabbits can carry the species of mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that cause scabies, this varies tremendously from region to region.

Unless your rabbit is symptomatic (showing signs of crust on the ears, around the eyes, and toes, etc.), it is not likely your daughter got the mites from the rabbit.  It is  more common for children to transmit them to each other, or get them from a dog or cat.
