Question
QUESTION: Hi
my rabbit has these strange growths all around her mouth. It doesn't hurt her when you touch them. Could this be some sort of parasite? The growths are a gross yellow are range from small dots to the size of a large pimple. Help!
ANSWER: Hi Melissa

There are numerous things that can cause these types of growths.  It very well could be a parasite, a virus, a skin condition and many many other things.  The very best thing you can do is get that bunny to the vet.  They can take cultures and give her the right treatment.

I am sorry I can't tell you exactly what is wrong without cultures.  It could be so many things but don't let it get out of hand.  Also if you have any other bunnies please keep them apart until you know what it is.

If you need help finding an exotic pet vet in your area you can go to

http://www.rabbit.org

on the left hand side of the page you will see a link for vets and they are listed by state.

Please let me know how she does.

Thank you

Pam

QUESTION: The rabbit with the growhts has been in a cage with another rabbit for about two weeks now. I had been waiting to see if they would get better. The other rabbit doesn't have these growyhs and it doesn't hurt the rabbit when you touch them. Could I just pull them off and put some antibiotic on it afterwards?

Answer
I wouldn't pull them off if I were you.  You can try putting the antibiotic cream right on them.  If you pull them off it could cause them to bleed.  I would still keep an eye on the other bunnies but if they haven't caught them by now then you are most likely correct in assuming they aren't contagious.

If the cream doesn't work after a 7 days I would really take her to the vet.  We don't recommend using antibiotic cream for more than 7 days.
