What kind of rabbit do I have?

Question
QUESTION: I was given a rabbit for a classroom pet last year by a friend that works at the local Humane Society.  They had several bunnies dropped off, and this was the only one they could not place.  He is all white with fur about 1 inch long.  His eyes are pinkish, but sometimes look blue if you look a bit from the side.  He has ears that lay down on either side of his head.  He is about a couple of pounds (I have had a hard time weighing him) and he is about 10-12 inches long from head to tail. Thank you for any direction you could give!

ANSWER: Hi Lisa,

It is impossible to say what kind of rabbit it is.  It sounds like a little mixed breed.  Perhaps a holland lop mix?  If the ears aren't completely lopped it may be a mix or it may be a holland lop whose ears just never fell.

It is called a ruby eyed white which is an albino gene.

If you can send a photo I can try to see if I can figure it out but it is sometimes hard to tell.

Have fun with your bunny

QUESTION: Here is a picture of my rabbit.  Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: Hi Lisa,

Your bunny is a beautiful Holland Lop.  He looks like he may be a frosted pearl which could explain the eye color.  He is absolutely lovely.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help!  Can you tell me if this bunny is the same kind?  Thanks again!

Answer
She sure looks like a Holland Lop.  Sometimes it is hard to tell but her head looks like a Holland.  If you have a way to weigh her ideally they should weigh less than 4 pounds.  I have had them weigh up to 5 1/2 pounds. If you get any larger than that it is more likely that she is a Mini Lop.  Holland Lops are the smallest lop breed and  Mini Lops are the next smallest lop breed.

Have fun with your bunnies.
