Rabbit Substance

Question
Hello, about 3 days ago my little sister got a mini rex, brown, male, baby rabbit for her birthday. She is 6 and loves to touch the rabbit a lot. When we bought the bunny, the pet store told us that males tend to pee and have a very strong odour when it senses other rabbits or animals, kind of like a territorial thing. I am not sure if you have heard about this. Tonight, I picked him up to pet him and I noticed there was a green goo like substance coming from around his genitals, I dont know if its urine or stool.

What do you think this could be?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Nicole,

From what your saying to me it sounds like the stuff your seeing around the genitals is his sent gland oils wich usually look nasty and smell disgusting and very strong. You can take a damp cloth and wash that away if needed but it will at some point come back. Its usually not green in color but a brown or yellowish in color if it is truly green there could be infection in the gland wich would require a visit with a good rabbit savvy vet. As far as the peeing that totally depends on the rabbit. Mine only have a issue when there is a doe near by and other males. Most of mine do not spray urine but I have had some that do. I hope this helps feel free to email back if you have any further questions. =:3
