QuestionMy rabbit was eating her pellets last night and suddenly had clear somewhat gooey fluid flowing out of her mouth/nose. She sounded like she was having trouble breathing. I quickly wiped her off with a paper towel to clear her airways and tried to open her mouth to see if there was a pellet or something lodged in there, but couldn't see anything - not that she was being very cooperative. She was definitely not drinking water at the time, so that wasn't the problem. It was a lot more than just a little bit of a runny nose - soaked up 2/3 of a paper towel.
Is it possible she just choked on a pellet and all the fluid started to help clear it? Does she have an infection? She seems fine otherwise - is eating, drinking, and pooping normally and has been out exploring this morning. Her nose and mouth are both also dry this morning. I do have an appointment for her to see the vet, but the earliest they could get me in is 4 days away.
Thanks in advance!
AnswerDear Stephanie,
Wow, what a scare! I'm glad you had the presence of mind to clear her airways. You may have saved her life.
No real telling what caused this. Rabbits do not have a vomit reflex, but I have heard of some rabbits "regurgitating" clear liquid when they aspirate a bit of food.
It's good that you have an appointment set up with the vet soon. IF she's acting normal now, then you probably dodged a bullet. But keep a close eye on her, and if this happens again, get her to the vet immediately, and tell them that its' an emergency.
Be sure you have a vet who is experienced with *rabbits*. You can find one here:

Hope this helps.
