Swollen bum area

Question

Rabbit Bum Photo
Hi,

I have a 3-4 year old dwarf lop female rabbit. It has had a dirty bum recently with poo stuck around it. We gave it a warm bath as suggested on websites and have changed its diet to more hay less pellets.

I have also noticed that lately its bum area looks a bit swollen - see imaged attached.
Is this a cause of concern?

Also, is there anything else that should be done, other than bathing the area when it becomes dirty?
I'm very worried about possibly flystrike and other related problems.

Cheers,
Joyce

Answer
Dear Joyce,

It looks as if your bunny is leaking a bit of urine, which is collecting on the fur around the perineum and causing a bit of urine burn and swelling.  I would continue cleaning him with the dry bath technique here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/buttbath.html

and wet only the areas where urine is collecting.  A tiny bit of neosporin (regular; no topical anesthetic!) will help soothe the area until you can get her to a good vet.

Please read this:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/urinary.html

for information on the various things that can cause urine leakage.  If your girl is not spayed, a uterine problem such as a tumor could be pressing on her bladder and causing incontinence.  Please read:

You can find a good rabbit vet here to help you:

www.rabbit.org/vets

Hope this helps.
