I think she And I get along GREAT she is my first rat. I think I'm going to call her spazzz. since when I reach in her cage she spazes as she runs to play. Is it normal for them to bite (nibble), I think she is only playing since its not hard, should I incurage the play biting or stop it in its tracks?

Answer
Yes, you can litter train a rat - normally they teach themselves, provided you clean up after them and return all their dirty bedding to the box and move their droppings to the box you'd like them to use. The best way to teach her tricks is to base them off of natural behavior. If you want her to perform a behavior on cue, when you see her perform that behavior on her own, give her the cue word, praise her and reward her with a special treat. Eventually she'll associate the cue word with that action and reaction. Rats are very intelligent and catch on quickly.

It's normal for them to groom and nibble, but if she ever bites too hard, exclaim loudly. It'll startle her and she'll realize she hurt you and you didn't enjoy it. My rats don't bite me hard at all, though; and I've only met a handful (out of hundreds) who ever did.
