Question
Hi I want to get a male rat, just for the sake of having one.
I already have 3 females, im not intending to breed, nor will they every meet, and I have a few questions.

1. How large does his cage need to be?

2. What are the behaviors like?

3. Is there anything i need to be aware of?

4. and about how large will he get?

Answer
Males and females don't differ much on care or space requirements; and as I say that every adult rat needs at least one square foot of cage, preferably more; that is what I suggest for a male rat as well. More is ALWAYS better with rats of any gender.

Males may tend to mark a little more, but they usually avoid peeing on loved ones. They are usually very cuddly and more inclined to hang out and spend time with their people than ignore them like females do.

Once a male hits puberty, sometimes they may get a little testy or aggressive. This can be common in specific bloodlines and it's always advisable to go to a breeder who breeds for healthy temperaments, to avoid any aggression issue. If you let me know where you're located, I can help you find a breeder nearby.

Males are usually two to three inches larger than females; but not always. I've known some very tiny males, as well. They are usually on the heftier side, as well; and can be prone to obesity due to being a little more lazy.
