Question
Hello,
Today I got bitten badly from our pet rat.I am very worried.
We adapted him about 2 month ago.He is about 8 months old, bought in a Petco. He was doing great so far.I could let him out of his cage for hours,he never destroyed anything and was always seeking our attention.About a month ago we have also rescued 2 stray kittens, who are also doing great, although they haven't gotten their first shots, yet.Ray,the rat first showed aggressiveness toward them,he bit them 2 times, but luckily their wounds healed nicely.
Today when I let him out on his usual outing,he strangely started biting my ankle.I was wearing socks so I didn't get hurt. Then when my son approached him with his foot,he bit him, luckily not deep. That's when I wanted to see what was going on with him and he viciously bit my hand, deep.
Then I got very scared.I have no idea what is going on with him. Please help!
I didn't go to the doctor,yet.Should I?
What should I do with him?   Thanks,Eszter

Answer
Ray is spooked by the kittens.  He bit you because of that, no doubt.   He is on the look out for them....I would not let him near them.  I never allow my rats to mingle with any other pets I have, from bunnies to cats or the dog etc.....rats go with rats, thats that.  Anything can spook the rat after that.

What should you do? Nothing. You do not need to see the doctor unless it becomes infected and if you keep it cleaned out, you will be fine.

As for what you should do with him.....I am not sure what you mean about that, but the important thing is NOT to show any negative energy around him or he will pick up on it.  He is spooked, no doubt, by the kittens.  Rats also do not take well to feet, esp with socks on.  Not sure why but I do think due to their poor eyesight they may assume its an animal in the sock.  With the kittens on his mind, he was spooked, got himself all nervous and he was defending himself.

For the next few days, do not pick him up. Let him come to you.  Wash up after you hold the kittens and keep them away from Ray.  Whatver you do, do not let Ray know you may be scared of another bite.  This will confuse him and make him feel insecure.  They pick up on our vibes very easily. Talk softly to him, keep him calm for the next few days and he will forget the kittens. Rats have a bad long termy memory.
