Question
I just bought a baby rat about 5 days ago. She sneezes all the time but doesnt have goopy eyes or a running nose and sometimes she freaks out. What i mean is ill hold her or shell be in her cage and shell jump around and flinch and it really scares me that maybe somethings wrong with her. Maybe its just because shes young? Should i be worried about these things?

Answer
A lot of rats from pet stores are not properly cared for or socialized and it's possible that she has the beginnings of a respiratory infection.  Though it may just be sneezes now it will probably get worse if left untreated.  Since you only got her 5 days ago, it may just be stress sneezes; at this point I would wait a few more days to a week to see if she gets any better, if not then you should definitely take her to a vet for some antibiotics.

The jumpiness is probably due to her not being properly socialized, it sounds like she is frightened of being held.  All you can really do for her is continue to hold her and eventually she should get used to being held and learn to like it or at least tolerate it.  To get her started, try putting her into the front pocket of a hoodie or a homemade 'rat pouch', something that she can feel safe inside but still be near you to smell you and you can reach in and pet her or give her treats periodically.  You can then carry her around the house while you do other things, or have her on your lap while you watch TV or something.  She should eventually calm down and get used to you.  The only other explanation is if there is something medical wrong with her, in which case make sure to mention it to your veterinarian.

I also would recommend that you get a second female for her to live with, as rats do much better in pairs.  Try to find a breeder in your area rather than buying from a pet store and you will be amazed at how much tamer and healthier a breeder rat is.

I hope that helps answer your question, good luck with your rat!
