Question

Layla's eye
Hi, my rat Layla is about 3 years old. She has had 3 tumors removed and has been on Baytril a couple of times for being sneezy. After her last surgery which was several months ago, some of her hair hasn't grown back, and the skin is rough and not healthy looking. She was sneezy a couple weeks ago so i gave her a full dose of Baytril and she got better. In the past 2 weeks she has lost a lot of weight and isn't eating hardly anything. I have been feeding her low fat string cheese in an effort to help her gain weight, but she is only getting thinner. Last night i noticed that her left eye was cloudy in the center. Everytime i open the cage she runs out and jumps to the floor, and she has never acted like this before. Tonight i took her in the bathroom to let her run around and watch her. She can't walk straight and seems to run in panic-mode. She breathes very hard and runs into things. I am very worried about her, but i have very little money, and can't take her to the vet unless i am positive that they can do something about it. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Katie

Answer
It appears she has lost her vision in that eye. What I am worried about is her panic mode. This indicates problems getting oxygen in many cases. She really really should see a vet for this and right away.  As for the eye, its hard to be sure from a photo, but this does seem to look like she has gone blind in that eye.  No need to worry if she has, though as rats have lousy vision as it is.
She may even have a pituitary tumor which can cause rats to be in panic mode and can cause them to be off balance etc... she is not a young rat and you have done well getting her to live to be 3 years old. As for eating, stop with the cheese. Use baby food instead.
