Ulcer on rats lip due to injury.

Question
Hello one of my Ratties Shylet injured his lip somehow. We don't know if he bit it or if he bit something and cut it, but it was bleeding quite a bit.

We cleaned out his lip, and he seemed really lethargic and not himself for a few days. Now he seems to be feeling better but the cut has developed into an ulcer on his lip. I am hesitant to take him to the vet because the only vet we can find that sees rodents really does not seem to know to much about rodents, and everytime we have been there we were not impressed.

How can I help my poor little guy heal? I am giving him soft foods as not to irritate it, is there anything I can put on it, or treat it with? I will take him to the vet if it doesn't start improving, but what can I do in the meantime? What wound care medications are safe for my rat?

Thank you so much, it is very appreciated!

Answer
Have you checked the rats teeth to be sure they are aligned properly and not cutting into his mouth?

Also, where are you located? I can give you names of vets that are not so clueless when it comes to rat care in your area if needed.

Check his mouth and teeth and let me know. Meanwhile, give him babyfoods to eat and nothing hard.
