Wheel tail

Question
I got a new rat from a pet shop and noticed her tail is really curled, it loops over her back.  I got her as she was all alone and had been for some time, she is settling in with my two other rats ok but she has some difficulty at times controlling her back end and is really clumsy. Pinky is about 3 months old, is there anything that can be done to fix it?  I don't have a wheel in my cage so have never come across this myself.

Answer
Since the tail is an extension of the vertebrae, this can be linked to back end.  However, she may have a problem with balance if she has an inner ear infection. I would see a vet for this.  I have seen tails curled up over their back and they are totally healthy and happy, but the loss of balance makes me uneasy.

Check out my website, sandyscrittercity.com and refer to the page on loss of balance in rats. See if this pertains to your little girl.
