Question

Lucy
My pet rat Lucy is about 9 months old, female. She lives with her mother in the same cage.

Yesterday Lucy started showing signs of illness, and just all around acting oddly. She has lost a considerable amount of weight, but she is still eating a bit; although not as much as usual. Her hips are sunken in now, and she keeps stretching her body out until she can't stretch anymore; and then begins dragging herself around. Sometimes she will stretch herself out and roll on her back and stay that way. She has also become a tad bit more anti-social than usual. Usually she's very energetic and excited to see me, and plays with her mother; but now she's very lethargic and would rather keep to herself. She will just curl up in a ball. When we take her out of her cage, she will still play but it is a lot slower than normal. Her belly is also slightly bloated.

Lucy has never been sick before. I did notice that she had a tiny tiny bit of red porphyrin discharge around her nose (not any on her eyes), but it went away a few hours ago and hasn't come back. There was a tad bit of shallow breathing before, but she seems fine with breathing now.

When she is stretching herself out, she lifts her tail up as well. She will then drag herself around with her front legs, but she is quite able to walk on all fours. When she presses her belly to the ground, she does not put her head or chin to the ground; just her body.

I am also attaching photo's of Lucy doing this.

Thank-you for your time!

Answer
She is in pain.  She needs to see a vet right away and a vet that knows how to treat rats. Please let me know where your located and if you need a good vet I will give you names. This vet MUST know how to treat rats because this is not something any vet can figure out. This is a sign of pain for sure.
