White eye splotch

Question

The eye blotch
I woke up yesterday, and found my rat letting out loud
squeaks. I learned 30 seconds later that these squeaks were
actually whistles caused by a large rod of hard snot in her
right (HER right) nostril. I removed it, and then noticed
that in her right eye, was what appeared to be a booger.
It's white, and it covers a little bit of the front of the
eye (closest to her nose). Upon closer inspection, I can no
longer see the pupil of that eye under a bright eye.

A friend suggested that it was a cataract, but it's just a
small splotch that covers about a third of the eye. I am
attaching a picture, and I apologize about the quality (it
was taken with a Nintendo DSi) and I will upload a better
picture if you need one.

Also, for the past couple of months, that particular eye has
had a lot of that red crust off and on. Before that, both
eyes had a light red ring around them.

We don't want to drag her into our vet only to find out that
it's something that we could have cured with time or simple
store-bought remedies.

Very recently (last 12 hours), upon waking up, she only
opens that eye halfway.

Answer

Santana with eye infec
That is a nasty infection, and trust me no store bought meds will help this.   My rat had the same thing, and within a day it looked like the photo I attached.  That eye had to be removed in order to save him from getting infection in his system (sepsis)  The vet you take your rat to see needs to be top notch with exotics or you will be wasting time and precious hard to come by these days money, plus your little darling will suffer as well.  If you need a good vet that is exotic certified and not just a regular vet that sees exotics plus the vet needs to know how to remove the eye should need be, which is pretty common when rats have nasty infections.  I fear this could be an abscess behind the eye that drained into the nasal cavity and this is why you saw the mucus from the nose as well. I hope I am wrong and its just a nasty infection but even that can damage the eye to the point it needs removed to keep the rat from pain and chronic infection.   Let me know your location if you need names of good vets.

Here is the photo of my boy, Santana.  You can see what he looks like now all better on my website under the ABOUT ME page.
