About 6 months ago one of my rats, Paige, was diagnosed with bone cancer. I brought her to the vet because her back foot/ankle was swollen. The vet, who regularly sees rats and has always been reliable, diagnosed her with bone cancer after taking an x-ray. At first she was unsure because it looked like the foot was completely shattered, but after researching it she gave me that diagnosis. Paige has been fine since then (other than resp. issues) and the foot/ankle didn't swell any more. In the last few days, her foot/ankle have at least tripled in size. She is still eating very well and drinking, but cannot use that back leg. There is not an open sore and there has never been individual bumps, so I really don't know if it could be bumble foot. The vet previously advised me against amputation but said that would be her only option. She is a little over a year and a half and has been on antibiotics most of her life as she has chronic resp. problems. Should I see another vet? Does it look like a tumor of some sort or could it possibly be bumble foot? Here is the best picture I could take of it--it is a purple color because I decided to try applying blue-kote in the case that it was bumble foot. Thank you.
AnswerWOW!! That vet is totally NUTS! You rat would have been DEAD and I mean DEAD long ago.....no way would a rat live with bone cancer and it not spreading is another clue that the vet is wrong.
This is INFECTION and needs antibiotics. have you seen my website about this? If not, please refer to sandyscrittercity.com and go to the page on rat ailments. The rats foot looks JUST like it. It is one of the most misdiagnosed conditions because the vets do not know enough about rat disease and will argue its broken or sprained or....well you obviously have found out the hard way.
Go private. I would love to know who this vet is. I promise I will be private. I can get in trouble if I dont keep it in confidence. I am curious to see how qualified this vet is to treat rats. I can give you names of vets who have a clue though. Need to know your city and state. This rat needs oral antibiotics but NOT baytri.....trimeth sulfa is the drug of choice along with a few doses of a steroid for inflammation. I HATE metacam. Makes me wonder about the resp problems too. Probably never treated properly for that, either. 4 to 6 weeks of baytril and doxy, dosed RIGHT not underdosed and after the first relapse, on the baytril twice a day for 6 weeks and once a day after that to prevent it from getting worse, causing lung scarring etc...
This just makes me mad. I feel so sorry for rats that see lousy vets!!
