Noodle wants to lick my teeth.

Question
Just another silly question I suppose, should I be concerned for his health or mine if he were to pry my mouth open with his precious tiny hands to lick my teeth? I tried moving him away, but he ran back with such gusto, I couldn't help but laugh (thus exposing my teeth and repeating the procedure). He did this to my boyfriend, as well. It happened late this morning, about half an hour after we had had hot pockets for lunch. I assume Noodle smelled the food we had eaten, because he acted SO excited to get in our mouths and this hasn't happened previously.

Pretty much I thought it was adorable, as well as kind of gross. I just wanted a professional opinion of how clean his little tongue is, should this happen again. I felt a little guilty putting him away after this incident, but, as I say, the enthusiasm! It was impossible to overcome.

Also: you mentioned avoiding foods high in sugar, caffeine, and dairy... but what about high in fat and sodium, such as the hot pockets? Are they to be avoided, or can he have small nibbles? (I would assume to steer clear of fatty foods, since even dogs aren't typically given such a treat.)

Answer
It's a normal rat behaviour to try to get into a human's mouth, oddly enough.  In the rat fancy it's known as 'rodentistry' =)  I personally don't let them do it; I'm not sure exactly how clean their mouths are but since they eat their own feces and lick their bottoms I would much rather just avoid their mouths entirely!  I know people who do let their rats do this and they never had a problem with it so it probably doesn't matter either way.

High fat and sodium foods should generally be avoided too, but little nibbles are perfectly fine.  Just like humans, rats can eat junk food but only in moderation.
