Question

My boys
Hiya,

I have three male rats, I got them all from a pet shop and two are from the same litter and one is slightly older. Firstly my eldest male rat (max) has some paralysis in his back legs, he seems to cope fine with this but I was wondering if theres anything I can do to make life easier for him. Also he seems to be losing his vision, he has recently started snatching foods, getting scared when I pick him up and I put him in the bath earlier for a clean and he started squeaking. I know the bath wasn't to hot as I always check before putting them in and the others were fine with it. How can I check his vision?

Then I have my Jimmy, he breaths very quickly, he's been on a couple of different courses of anti-biotic but they don't seem to have improved anything. He doesn't seem to have much energy but still loves his foot and drinks often. I was just wondering if you can suggest anything that it might be or what I can do for him?

Then I have my Timmy, he has a ratterly chest which is quite loud, even louder when hes curled up asleep! Hes been on quite a few different anti-biotic for this and nothing has cleared it up. He coughs quite a bit aswell. I keep their cage very clean and that helps but hasn't got rid of it. Can you suggest anything for this aswell?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Answer
Your boys are adorable!  Thank you for sharing their photo!
Lets star with the rat that may have vision loss.
You can test his vision by shining a flash light in his eyes and check to see if his pupils change. Its difficult to test him by trying to move your finger in front of his eyes etc...because the sense movement easily and this can mislead you into thinking they can see ok. Either way, if he is blind, its not that huge of a deal since they have lousy vision anyhow and do not really depend on vision to navigate around.  I would try to keep things the same in the cage for him though.

Jimmy may need to have the vet check into the possibility of a heart problem. It sounds like this may be what is going on but its difficult to say without seeing him.
Timmy may have lung scarring which may cause him to have alot of difficulties.  What I need to know is, what meds were used and for how long and did he ever respond at all to treatment?
