My rat keeps peeing

Question
I have a 14 month old white albino rat who keeps peeing all over in small drops. Whenever he is playing with us and running around on the bed, he keeps leaving behind small droplets of urine.
Is there something wrong (or is it it a way to mark his territory, but he did not use to do this earlier) and what can I do to help my small friend? Please advise.

Answer
This is common for an intact male to do.  The reason they do it in the wild is to mark their turf but also it is a way to help them get around. In the wild, rats travel underground in dark tunnels. They rely on their whiskers and their urine scented trails to find their way back to their nest.  Kind of like leaving a trail of bread crumbs, rats leave a urine trail and sniff for it on their way back home.  If he just started to do this more often, he may have a urinary tract infection.  Is he drinking more?  He should see a vet for this as it can be fatal due to renal failure if it goes untreated. Do you have a vet?
