Question

Tumor
This picture is of my rat, Sprinkles. She is about 5 months old and has sadly developed some sort of tumor under her arm. I've just noticed it today, and I'm not sure how long it's been there, but it's not very large yet. It doesn't seem to have any scabs, and it feels very soft and warm. My parents believe it's stupid to spend money to take a rodent to the vet, but I'd like to know what to expect, as I may be able to get her there myself. She's very young, and I'd really like her to have a good quality of life.

Answer
She is pretty young for this to be a mammary tumor, but it still can be. Nothing shocks me.

Let your parents know that a pet is a pet, regardless that its a rodent, a dog or a cat....its a pet and its a pet owner responsibility to give it the proper care it needs. Otherwise, that makes the person a less than adequate pet owner and its actually considered to be negligent to withhold medical treatment from an animal that requires it, regardless of the species.

That said, please refer to my website, sandyscrittercity.com and refer to the page on tumors in order to know what to expect from this tumor.  She cant live with it, obviously, as it will eventually shorten her life, even though its more than likely benign.  She needs a good vet that is qualified to treat rats and if this is indeed a tumor, she  should be spayed too, and this will keep her from going through this all the time.  I advise spaying females right at this age.

I am hoping its an abscess, though....lets give it a few days to see if it develops a head. This is a prime location for an abscess, too...  I will keep my fingers crossed.

Also, where are you located? I can find you a vet if you want names of vets that treat rats.
