Question

Burt Gets a Snack
ANSWER:
Fantastic!!!!!   Do you mind if I use this photo and your instructions on how to build this nebulization chamber.  This would also be ideal for oxygen to be piped in as well, perhaps a little bit bigger since the rat may need to spend a few days living in it, but still, the set up would be similiar.  I would, of course, includ your nam nad citty   do want to ask how much gentocin your putting in the neb cup.  What did they tell you to measure out and use?   Anyhow,

QUESTION: Hi!

I'm working on getting what amounts of Gentocin are in the Neb solution. You'd think it would be an easy answer but apparently not!

I've been putting about 5 ccs of the solution in the nebulizer each treatment, twice daily.

I'd love for you to post the neb chamber stuff!! But I took better pictures for you and I will write a little better instructions.

I wrote to you at . I put "Lung tumors- Nebulizer photos" as the subject line. I'll send the photos/steps that way when you respond!

Answer:    You do mean .5 ccs right?  Because 5 ccs would be a heck of alot of medication.

Follow-up Question:

My neb cup holds 10 ccs. The instructions on the solution say to fill the cup and use it all. However, I don't do that cause it would take an hour!
I have not heard back from the vet about how what amounts of medicine are in the solution. Is it a secret??? :(

I treated Burt for 10 minutes last night, then noticed he started coughing a little so  I treated him for 10 more.

This morning he's "squeak-breathing" [congested?] and has a cough again. Not as bad as before, but maybe getting worse.

I treated him for 20 minutes this morning, but he still was making a little squeak when he breathes and coughed.

**Should I start Lasix again, or is it time to throw in the towel?

PS- I'll still email you better pictures if you're interested.
Also attached is Burt after a successful neb treatment yesterday before the problem started again. :) Cutie pie!

Answer
Yes start the lasix again. If he truly needs the lasix, he may very well have heart disease esp if the gentocin isnt working.

There ARE medications to give him if he does have heart disease, but again, its all a matter of if the rat can be kept comfortable and still have a good quality of life.

As for the nebulizer, 1 cc of medication is too much medication for the rat which is why I asked if you meant .1cc rather than 1cc etc....

You should fill the cup up Nebulize 15 minutes, 2-3 times a day, for 14 days with the following mixture:

8 mL sterile saline
0.5mL Gentocin injectable ( IF the strength is 100 mg/mL )

0.5 ml to be put in the neb cup and inhaled ONLY

Basically there will be alot more saline and just a tad of gentocin.
