open mammary tumor

Question
Sandi!!  Vet Hating again!! It's possible due to the location and thin skin there he had to use skin sutures although I agree, glue or staples are better. Also, the rat may have made such a mess of the site she could have destroyed the skin and secondary closure would be hard. We can make a fortune if we can develops an E-Collar rats will tolerate. Rimadyl, while not approved, has decent pain properties. I prefer Metacam. I gotta come up with a safe morphine dose. The problem with Torb is it doesn't last long. Rimadyl may up to 24 hours but more likely 12 in a rat. Should have used both

Answer
Do you know how many vets use narcotic pain medication on rats?

You and maybe one other!!

And you can think of all kinds of things that may have gone wrong to vouch for the Vet, but...I can still vet hate.  LOL   I like you though :)   Keep reading, you will see how I tell people about this PHENOMENAL VET in Marietta GA!

Also, you have uber experience with surgeries and rats and can probably close with your eyes shut. And yes, the rat could have made a mess of his skin (or hers, I mean) but that doesnt mean it couldnt have been stapled.  I do know that they can heal ok like this when its not a deep incision...had it been a spay though, what would the vet have done? Let it open because of the lack of skin for proper closure?  IF ONLY they would be more specific....perhaps let the client know that leaving this open wont be cause for the rat to bleed to death. Let the pet owner know that what they are seeing when its a mammary tumor site that are usually not deep incisions, not deep enough where it can pose a danger if its open.....and let them know they are NOT seeing kidneys or a uterus.  I have more people scared to death about this and why are they not reassured about this....why do they have to seek advice elsewhere?  Thats why I am glad to be here.....even if some days I pull my hair out due to aggravation.  Someone has to be there to follow in the Vets footsteps.  I used to talk to people about what just transpired after the vet visit and made money doing it.  Not because the vet was incompetent though, but this allowed the Vet to get on to the next patient and also helped the client feel that they had all the answers they were looking for since they were given extra time to ask anything they may have forgotten to ask the vet.  If I couldnt answer their questions, or if it was above my head, I would of course go and get the Vet....so I am not saying vets that dont sit there and talk to a pet owner for an hour after the exam is over are bad vets, but sometimes they are in there for all of 10 seconds and let the tech finish up, never coming back in again. The pet owner stands there feeling like an ass because they dont know if they should check out of if the vet is coming back in....why do they feel this way? Because they did not get all the answers they needed so they assume there is still more to this vet visit but there isnt.  Thats it. Its over. Pay the $150 and get the flock out of here.  LOL   Seriously.  YOU though, your different.  You want to know this stuff. You want to know what we think and how we feel and your practice as a Vet benefits from this because it makes you a better Vet.  You are in tune with your clients. Thats good. Thats why I send people your way, even cat and dog owners, not just little critter owners!

Now when you came up with that safe morphine dose....how hard will it be to convince your colleagues to use it too?
