Stuart

Question
QUESTION: Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to address my issue with
head shaking. HOWEVER, I recently helped my friend Joe find himself a
wonderful rat baby named Stuart. On Friday Stuart was lost. Joe opened a
drawer and Stuart's little foot must have been on the wheel track because he
said he heard a squeak and now poor little Stuart has a purple foot. We are
going to the vet together since I am going to get my rat checked for mites.
What can a vet do for little Stuart? Give him a tiny cast? tiny pain killers? tiny
crutches??? I have no I idea what one is to do in this situation. Other than
amputate which Joe wants to avoid. What will they do for Stuart?

ANSWER:
No crutches, no cast unless its broken (not all vets cast but it can be done, but they end up eating it off in a few days! LOL!) and even if it is, the vet can put a pin in it.  If there is no bone protruding and it is just purple, it is bruised. Is it swollen? The vet can and SHOULD give him both metacam and also a narcotic pain killer. Is Stuart limping?  Keep him in a small cage so he cannot climb all around and keep him from jumping and climbing UNLESS he wants to do it.

Also, is the vet a good exotic vet that knows about rats?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Well he look as though he is in some sort of obvious pain as he looks very scared and I don't blame him, poor thing. Also, I don't remember if he was limping but he was definitely not putting any pressure on that foot. We are going to an animal hospital... I hope they help all types of animals. :\ Kind of random but do you know anything about South King St. Animal Hospital in Honolulu, HI?
