Question
Hello

I've just brought two 6-8 week old rats, and of course coming from a pet store they are sneezing all over the place. I have had rats for several years and am quite certain that it is an upper respiratory infections. I have baytril and can easily determine the dosage based on weight, however I have no doxycycline. My vet is not available today and the emergency clinic in town will not see pet rats. Is there any benefit to starting them on the baytril without the doxycycline?

Answer
there is benefit and I would definately do so if you're comfortable basing it on weight - HOWEVER - baytril is not heavily recommended for use in rats under 16 weeks of age due to its harshness on internal organs. It's only recommended to use baytril when the benefits much outweigh the risks.
