Question
I have a few questions . I have a year old dumbo female . She was living with another rat who was quite territorial and I believe she bit Kizzy(the dumbo) on her neck . She has a small bump which seems to be producing a green pus so I cleaned it and blood came out and I clean it everyday and now it looks red , better ! But still red . She shows no sign of pain or discomfort . Even when I clean she doesn't pull away or anything . I was wondering what it could be and if I should take her in . The rat who bit her is now living with someone else . So she isn't hurting at all [: My other question is what cage is good for two rats . I'm looking for something I can get at a pet store . I have a ferret nation and it is just too much hassle to keep clean especially with Kiz . She loves to make a mess of everything . So I was wondering what cage is suitable but also at a pet store and I know pet stores don't have much of a variety . I am getting a 2 month rattie next week she is a dumbo as well ! Would it be bad to put her in the same cage as Kizzy with her wound . Although it is improving I'm not sure if I should or not .

Answer
if its still red it's probably a bit of an infection. Try not to worry it too much.. what are you using to clean it? At this point, switch to just using a hot compress to draw out the infection -- not scalding, but certainly warm enough to draw out any ickies still in there. Don't use any sort of soap or ointment, and never hydrogen peroxide. If a scab begins to form, let it -- don't remove it or pick at it. If the swelling gets worse or if it gets angry looking again and begins to pus, take her in to the vet and have them put her on some antibiotics.

You need to be sure to put the new rattie in quarantine (the RMCA website has a wonderful article, as does Ratguide.com). Once she's out of quarantine, she can go in with Kizzy, provided Kizzy is okay with that. Her wound is on the mend and there is little to worry about with that unless they're arguing.

Regarding a cage -- I tend to stick with the My First Home cages, the bigger the better. I currently use the Sugar Glider cage for two adult rats, and move up from there. Good luck.
