Missing upper tooth

Question
I have two female rats about 1 1/2 years old. They have always been in good shape and get plenty of food and exercise. I recently discovered that one of the rats upper teeth is completely missing. This has happened within the last week or so and I am worried that she might not be able to properly grind her teeth or have trouble eating. Is there anything I could do to help her? Is this a normal problem with ratties? Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer
Hi Wade

That is pretty odd, but it should grow back. Rat teeth grow all the time  and although if you pull it at the root it wont grow back, it should grow back if it just broke at the surface.

I would soften her food for her if she is eating rodent blocks and offer her veggies and fruits too. Soft carrots and peas can be given and left down all day long changed out twice a day so they dont get all funky and this way she can pick at it when she is hungry. I would for sure soften the lab blocks with warm water and offer her baby food too.  You can take her to the vet and have him take a look. He may want to trim the bottom teeth to make things a bit more even. I do  not suggest trimming yourself in case you clip the tongue. I dont even like to trim my rats teeth.

Does she seem ok otherwise?
