Neutering older rat

Question
I am wondering if it would be safe to neuter a 2.1 year old rat. I dont know if the risks are higher or lower due to his age, he has never had mycoplasmosis flair ups, he has had mild absesses (3 total and have not returned in about 6mths)which go away after about a week of being drained.
He isnt friendly towards male rats but loves being around females(for obvious reasons) and I would like to get him a female rat to be around but without babies. Hes slowing down a bit but does fine going up and down ramps and such. I have 3 other boys that I ended up getting in an attempt to find him a buddy but no luck and the 3 boys are now together.

I dont want him to be alone(in the rat sense) forever but I also dont want to lose him to a surgery. What would you think would be my best option. I know a few vets around that would be able to do the surgery but Im very apprehensive to go through with it.

Any info would be appreciated
Thank you,
Kelcie

Answer
2 years old is not really that old...but I would opt to spay the female for many reasons, mainly to prevent mammary tumors and deadly pyometra (nasty infection of the uterus that can lead to the eruption of the uterus and death)  and lessen the chance of pituitary tumors developing. How old is the girl  you would want to put with him?

I am sure that, as long as the vet your using is very skilled doing surgery on small mammals, he will be just fine...but there is a risk no matter what the age.

Me? I would just let him be alone since he has done it for 2 years already. Some rats are better off alone. He seems to have made it clear he wants to reign the cage as solo king.
