Squirrel Has Pica

Question
Hello, I have a what I believe to be 9 month old albino Lab rat which I am
using for my psychology class after which I will be adopting her to keep as
my own. Recently I have noticed an almost obsessive interest in her to chew
on paper. Any kind of paper will do from printer paper to notecards to
textbooks and magazines.  Upon asking my Professor he told me she is
experiencing Pica and I will have to keep her away from paper products the
rest of her life but from what I have read online it seems that Pica occurs
when a rat has an upset stomach which one would make one think that once
the rat feels better the pica goes away. Which is true? Is there anyway to get
her not to stop eating paper?  Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
Okay, your professor is wrong, Pica is when a rat has an upset stomach, and since rats cannot vomit they try to compensate it by eating clay, paper, card board and their own litter, mostly things that are not edilbe.
I would definatly take her to the vets.
They might put her on some gentle anti-biotics.
Your girl feels nauseous so I would make her feel as comfortable as possible.
Try giving her small bits of fresh vegetables or some salt free crackers.
Hope I helpled!
