New Pet Rats

Question
Hi Sandra,

I just bought my son two female baby rats from the pet store. I have had five before this and I am a little concerned about these two. They sneeze quite often and are sleeping not only in the day but through the night as well. I know they are nocturnal and seeing how they don't play and just sit around a lot really concerns me. They also sit still and their whole bodies look like they are jerking. Its like having the hiccups along with rapid breathing. Is this normal? I don't remember any others like this. I am not sure how old they are. We have only had them two days. If you have any advice it would be so much appreciated.

Thanks so much,
Sarah

Answer
I have new baby rats myself and can tell you that they are non stop balls of energy. Even if they are asleep, once they see me they are up and ready to go, climbing all over the cage, waiting at the gate.  They should NOT be sleeping all day and night too if they are not newborn rats.

They need a vet.  I also suggest spaying them. Female rats are very prone to mammary tumors in adult life, usually after 18 months of age. Please read about mammary tumors on my website here:

If you need a good rat vet let me know and I will give you some names but I need to know your location.

hang in there!
