Question

swollen eye, Lain
Hi Sandra,

My rat, Lain, has developed a swollen eye that looks pretty painful!  I have attached an image for you to see.  I am taking her to the vet tomorrow, but since I know you are so familiar with rats (probably moreso than most exotic vets, even!), do you have any idea what this could be?  Is there anything I could do to make her more comfortable in the meantime?  Also, I live in the tampa bay area.  Do you know of any exotic vets that are particularly good with rats?  I like my exotic vet and she seems to really care about the animals there, but sometimes I feel like she isn't as familiar with rats as I would like and I want to make sure they get the best care. Thanks so much for your help.

Ouch that looks painful!  Who is your Vet?  Make the next follow up private so what we say is confidential.  I am not aware of any other female Vets in the Tampa area that is an Exotic specialist other than general vets that see exotic mammals but as a special interest, not formally board certified in avian/exotics.

Have you ever heard of Dr. Teresa Lightfoot of

As for what it may be....it looks like it could be an abscess or tumor behind the eye. Removing the eye may be necessary for recovery. This is an educated guess however, it could just be a nasty infection, but it still may only be properly resolved through enucleation. My rat lost his eye a few years back (he has since passed away when he was close to 3 years old)
I live in Cape Coral, about 2 hours south of Tampa and should I ever need a Vet for a delicate surgery such as enucleation, I would make the drive up north to Tampa to see Dr.Lightfoot and would only trust a facility like Florida Veterinary Specialists since they are equipped with microsurgical instruments made especially for small mammals etc...
