RESPIRATORY PROBLEM IN MY RAT

Question

My boys Tibby & Tabby
Hello! I have had two male rats (Tibby & Tabby) for a year now so they're only around a year old.Tabby always seemed to be the healthiest of the two.
When i first got them Tibby had a bit of a sneezy nose and even blew the odd bubble from his nostril, so i took him to the vets, the vet checked his chest
and said it was clear, nothing too much to worry about. Not long after it went away nothing since, he's had an ear infection which is currently being treated on baytril.
A couple of weeks ago i noticed Tabby had a little squeak as he breathed but other than that he was him self, so i just put it down to being the same as what Tibby had, but i kept my eye on him. Then i noticed him getting more tired easily and seemed a bit distressed so i took him straight to the vets, unfortunately the infection was in his lungs,
she explained myco to me which i knew a tiny bit about already from reading on the net.  She gave him two injections, 1 was 0.20mls cotvasone and the other was 0.10mls of baytril, then i had to give him 0.5mls baytril once a day for 5 days orally. But that night he just got worse, i phoned the vet, he said i have to give the baytril time to work. Next morning he was still bad so i took him to the vets again, they suggested putting him down, i disagreed as i thought there has to be more they can do for him so they gave him two more  injections of the same as above and a sachet of Bisolvon to put a pinch on his food once a day, he also said to give him the baytril 0.1mls twice a day but i felt that that was not enough so i have been giving him the 0.5mls that the first vet had told me to give him but i have separated it into 0.25mls twice a day. He said if there is no improvement he shall need to be put down. Next day there was no improvement, he wasn't eating or drinking so he was really badly dehydrated and also had diarrhea. I took him to a different vets that my mum had been with for about 25 years, i did think he would put him down but he said he will try another treatment, (which really pleased me) he gave him an injection of 0.1mls dexafort and 0.1mls of oxytetrin, he gave me two pouches of rehydration and convalescence support. He also told me to carry on with the baytril. We gave him the rehydration and convalescence support with a bit of difficulty but he gave up his fight in the end and just took it. Next morning he was sooo much better, he sniffed my hand for attention, he was taking a drink, he was also taking the food but not eating it. Next day (today) he is  eating a bit of the food. So fingers crossed he will get better. The only thing that is worrying me is if (fingers crossed) he does get through this and then the medication stops i'm terrified it will come straight back so i really want to get something ready straight away that he can take for the rest of his life to help keep the nasty thing away. What would you suggest would be best so i can talk to my vet about it??

Answer
I am assuming your in the UK and your medications are different than ours.  I would ask the vet if the medication that got him on the right track can be used daily to prevent relapse.  Usually we do that here in the US and keep the rats on the medication that helped for the duration of their already short life and this helped them live out a longer life than they would have without it.

Has anyone kept your rat and kept him in oxygen while he was given medications?
