my baby rat is sick

Question
She's not very old. Maybe 3 or 4 months. She used to be very active and hyper. We also nicknamed her "Squeeks" because she seemed to hiccup and sneeze every few seconds or so since I got her.

Just a few days ago I noticed that rusty red porphyrin around her nose. She seemed dizzy and uncordinated yesterday evening when I was playing with my rats. And this morning she was hardly moving around my bed! It seemed like her right side was having a very difficult time moving, like it had no strength. And her Right eye is so dark and covered in porphyrin! She is lying in her cage now, but I'm afraid the other rat will pick on her. She seemed to eat a little, but when she tried to get water from the bottle, she fell over so I had to feed her by hand.
I have to go to work right now and I can't get her to a vet or anything. But I'm having my roommate look after her, so if it gets serious she can take her in. What should I do? Should I separate her from the other rat? Should I keep her warm with a heater or something? Does she need a vet? Please help!!

Thanks,
Misha

Answer
She needs to see a vet as soon as you are able.  It sounds like she had a moderate respiratory infection when you first got her and since you didn't treat it it got worse, possibly spreading into her ear, which would explain the uncoordination.  It probably is treatable with aggressive antibiotics, but if it was left too long it may not respond well.  You don't need to separate her, and as long as her body feels normal temperature she doesn't need a heater, but if she feels cold to the touch you should warm her cage with a hot towel, electric blanket, water bottle, etc, just make sure it isn't too hot and she can escape from it if need be.  Feed her some baby food to get her eating and give her some water with an eyedropper or from a spoon she can lick from.  Hopefully she will be all right until you can get her to a vet.  I hope she gets better soon, good luck!
