Question
Hi, i was wondering if it was okay to keep a or two rats,I'm not sure how many i can keep in my aquarium. I know they like to be in pairs and it would be unfair to keep them alone. My question is can i keep rats in a 20 gallon high aquarium(24 long 12 wide 15 high)? If i provide tons of ramps and stairs, since the aquarium is high and not long.I know the main problem about keeping them in aquarium is ventilation but this shouldn't be a problem since i pick the perfect area. Another question is, how many should i keep?It will probably be summer when i get them and i will have plenty of time to bond with him or them, please respond i need help. But if i provide enough air circulation and safe ramps and hammocks and make sure to clean the tank every week or so would it be okay?

Answer
The problem is that the fumes from the ammonia in the urine a rat produces has no way of escaping. If you were to spot clean any massively dirty spots daily and clean the cage promptly; use a low-dust, low-track bedding (like pelleted newspaper bedding or aspen); and use a wire top with plenty of ventilation without creating a draft, yes, you might be okay. But I don't recommend it. I recommend wire cages. In a 20 gallon, you should limit to two.

Again, I prefer wire, and that is what I recommend.
