Question

healthy ear vs red ear
Hi Sandra, Im worried abouut my 13 week old female rat Pinto. Usually her ears are a light pink-white,quite thin, giving them almost a translucency when light is behind them. Yesterday i noticed her ears looked red, like almost sunburnt, and her ear- flesh is swollen, and now you cant see through the ears. The ear-holes are clean and her balance is fine (no head tilting )so im not convinced it is an inner ear infection. This morning, her ears look worse, and now they have light crusty flakey white stuff on them, almost like light eczema. There is the odd bit off yellow dried crust to, but its mostly white dried crust. She seems like her normal happy self, but im just very worried that it may turn into something terrible. ..
Please if you could help, i would be so appreciative! I have tried to take photos of her ear, a before shot and an after shot. Many Thanks,
Lexie

Answer
Hi

Sounds like she may have a little fungal infection.  Lets start first by using hydrocortisone or cortisone ointment, found over the counter.  Rub in well. Dont worry if she grooms it off and licks it. It wont hurt.

I am suspecting possibly a dermatitis for now, worrying about it being an infection later.  If the cortisone doesnt work, we will move on to something else.  Also, do you have a vet that is good with exotics?  If not, let me know and I will give you some names of good vets in case we cannot get this under control on our own.  I dont feel its an emergency of any kind though no matter what, even if it is mange (which would surprise me a bit) the vet could help.
