Question
What if the fur on your rat starts coming off?(shredding)

Answer
Hi Allison

I am not real sure I understand the question. If you mean shedding, that is normal to shed some fur. Most animals do shed their coat especially various times of the year.
Some types of rats actually shed their entire coat and grow a new one, such as the double rex or the patchwork hairless rat. They are also supposed to do this. Baby rats also shed and grow and thicker, more coarse coat as they age.

Now, if you mean that your rat, a regular type of rat that is not a semi hairless or patchwork hairless or double rex, and is losing its fur in patches in places leaving bare spots here and there, and the skin under the area that the fur has come out of is red or there are lesions and scabs and maybe the rat is scratching alot....that means there is a problem. It could be the diet. High protein will do this. It could be parasites such as lice or mites.
I need for you to be a bit more specific in what you mean that your rat hs shredding, or do you mean shedding?

I will wait for your follow up response.
