baytril burn on head

Question
For people reading this my rat has a baytril burn from an injection after
taking her to the vet for vaginal bleeding.

Thankyou for the site, he is not on it but there is no vet on it even close to my
area. Is this a list of all real exotic vets or only as a guide to help find one?
i live in downtown vancouver canada so not a small town i figured there
would be at least one.

ok, I'm glad the meds are good is 20 days long enough?

She is active, eating, drinking, pooping and peeing but i can tell she is
annoyed by the burn on her head. She isn't having much pus dicharge looks a
little more normal but not totally gone.

The burn is literally on the top of her head and she scratches it with her back
foot and washes over it with her front paws constantly. I'm afraid it will get
infected from what ever is under her nails so i put a a collar around her neck
with vet wrap and some paper medical tape about an inch wide so she
scratches that instead.

My other question is:
1)The ointment is greasy and seems to keep the spot greasy. Is it more
important to apply the ointment regularly or keep the spot more dry to heal?
I'm assuming the antibotics will help heal any infection this spot may
develop?

i wish i could attach a pic of the spot so you could tell your opinion of how
bad it is.

I'ave decided to not spay for the time being especially with this burn. i am
going to keep with the antibotics and look into that hormone u mentioned.i
feel like i may rob her of time she is happy and make her misreable for a
recovery time for a possible risky operation.

Thank you for the info on your ratty oreo it really helps to understand what
may be happening by the past experiences of a knowledgeable rat expert.

Answer
Hi

The list contains all exotic vets that are members of the AEMV. Canada may have another association as do some other countries outside the US but for the most part, if they are not on the list, they probably are not certified exotic vets.  Again though that doesnt always mean they do not know their stuff.

The meds being used for 20 days should be good. It is a potent potent drug and I would not suggest using it for long term so 20 days is good.
If it is clearing the infection up this fast you can be sure it is doing its job.

The ointment...it should promote healing while trying to keep it from infection. I would ask if the vet can get an ointment called Silvadene ointment. This is used for second degree burns and promotes healing and also contains antibiotic properties. All you need is a spoonful from the vet and use a small dab twice a day. It should really help so much.
Just be certain you tell the vet you read what it is so he understands your not just assuming something.  Its not even an allergic response to the baytril, it is just from how caustic the liquid is under the rats tender skin.

I also agree with you about the spaying. I would wait too. I would just be leary at this point. If she were on deaths door and spaying was the only option, I would do it, but not now....not when there are other options and esp not now that she is healing already.
