partial loss of toe

Question
About a week ago, my rat lost part of his toe (I think one of my other rats may have bitten it), he was bleeding quite alot and I couldnt stop the bleeding so I took him to the vet. All the vet did was look at him for 2 seconds and gave me antibiotics to give to him.

I took him to the vet again yesterday and he said that it was infected and the bone was exposed but he only gave me more antibiotics. Does that seem right?

I think he is in pain because he keeps biting me (which he has never done before) and Im not doing anything to provoke it. And is it possible that it may have damaged a nerve? His tail keeps flicking randomly, even when he is asleep (which never happened before)

Answer
Your vet is TERRIBLE and your rat needs pain medication too.  I would find another vet. I am so fed up with these incompetent vets that see rats I am seeing red here!!!  I wish I could suggest another vet for your rat.  I know you live in another part of the world, but I could use the resources I have to find someone else for him!!  As for the bleeding, the toe is a very vascular area and that is why it bled so much.  Applying pressure to it and believe it or not, putting flour on it can help slow down bleeding till the vet is seen. Of course that is over now, but we have to worry about getting the infection under control.  What is the name of the antibiotic the vet gave him?  He needs a narcotic pain killer as well.  I am thinking this vet wont do much about that, though. Sadly!!!
