Rat is not doing well

Question
QUESTION: I talked to you earlier this week about how my young rat having a myco infection. My other rat has it too and was put on Baytril as well. The problem now is that the other rat isnt acting himself. He is sleeping and doesnt really want to eat, he will take treats and he is still drinking some. The rat specialist wont be in until Monday so Im not sure what to do about him. He has the pyorphine around his nose indicating that he isnt feeling well. I dont know what to do for him until Monday or what could be wrong with him, his breathing isnt worse, he still does the silent hiccup thing. He was running around my room a few days ago but I have nothing poisonous around my room. Is it possible he could have an intestinal blockage and how would I tell if he did, I've pressed his belly and he doesnt react to it. Im worried that hes getting worse and what do to about it. When I took my rats into the vet the vet told me since they both had the myco that I didnt have to separate them and Im thinking that it might've been better to separate them?

ANSWER: Hi Kelcie

Is he passing stools? Also, sometimes when rats have a respiratory infection (URI) they have a hard time chewing because it takes their breath away easier. Its easier for them to lick rather than chew. I would suggest letting him lick babyfood from your finger (any flavor)

Are you saying that he isnt getting worse with breathing yet he is acting worse as far as weaker and perhaps becoming lethargic?
If he isnt eating much he may not be passing stools as he normally would either.

How is his breathing in general? Is he breathing fast, does his sides seem to sink in when he breathes?

I would NOT separate them mainly because the stress of keeping them apart may very well make things worse. Stress can cause the immune system to weaken and they can end up with a secondary infection.

For all of them to have a respiratory infection at once makes me wonder a few things:

Are they in a cage or tank?

WHat type of litter do you use?

QUESTION: He just seems weaker. His breathing is fast, but makes no discernable noise other than breathing noise. He is passing stools and will eat some solid things, I dont know if hes drinking except of the fact that he peed on me earlier and I gave him 2CCs of water before he went to sleep. I only have two rats, in a cage with a solid bottom using carefresh paper bedding and they have about 4-6hrs outside of the cage nearly everyday. Unfortunately a few rats at the store I work at have upper repiratory infections which is where I recently got one of them. Its just my older rat (about 8mths old) is the one I worry about the most. Hes on Baytril just as the younger one is(who is rambunctious as ever), and he was getting better, its just that the last day or two hes been sleeping a lot. I just hope he'll be okay till Monday

Answer
I think he is sleeping alot because he is trying to heal and recover.
However, there is a difference between resting or being lethargic.  You must be certain he is getting liquids because he can dehydrate in a heartbeat.  Continue to give the water in a syringe too...and you can give pedialyte too. I would even try offering baby food.
Have the vet suggested a second antibiotic to use along with the baytril?
