Question
hi there,
i got a new rat skye today too put with my other two, when i got her home i noticed there was urine in her blood, as she is new i don't know if she is acting differently or anything, i will take her to the vet if this continues but i would like to leave it a few days.

what can be the cause of urine in the blood?
and also should i keep her away from my other two for  now in case its an infection?

i think she is about 6 months old, she was a rescue rat who was dumped in a bin when she was a baby, she also doesn't have red discharge around the eyes or nose and her fur seems very healthy and smooth!
thanks for your time
Ashleigh

Answer
Don't wait!  Take her to the vet as soon as you possibly can, and hopefully, you can find an exotic vet that has specific experience with rats.  Blood in urine is always a serious matter, but may be treatable with medication as long as you don't wait, or it may be too late.

Here is a link to a website that discusses the various problems associated with blood in rat's urine --> http://www.sandyscrittercity.com/genitalproblems.htm

As far as keeping her away from your others, absolutely YES!  Quarantining a new rat before introducing into an existing colony is a must, even if she didn't have any visible signs of illness, in order to protect your other rats.  This is especially important if the new rat is coming from a pet store or a rescue (as opposed to a breeder).  2 to 3 weeks at minimum and ideally, you need to completely keep the new rat in a different air space than the others.  That is not always possible since often an entire house uses the same air ducts.  But perhaps you have a garage where the temperature is comfortable, or you can give her to a friend to watch for a few weeks if possible.

I'm also including a link to information about the proper way to quarantine a new rat -->  http://www.sandyscrittercity.com/thequarantinepage.htm

Good luck!  I hope your new baby is ok.  Please let me know if I can answer anything else.
