Question
I have three young rats that I purchased from a local pet store and of course they were all sick. I have had them on antibiotics now for about 9 days and though there sneezing had gotten better, I can hear the mucus in their little noses. They almost make this chirping sound and I wonder if they are getting any better? If the noise continues I am taking them back to the vet. I just want to know if I am overreacting. Thanks for all the information you provide.

Answer
Hi Nicole

Rule of thumb: If the rats are not improving after the 3rd day, the antibiotic is not working properly and needs changed. Antibiotics usually enter the blood stream and begin to kill of the organism causing the infection within 24 to 48 hours and improvement is seen in that time frame. After the 3rd day, its time for a change.  From what you describe, the rats have a respiratory infection probably due to mycoplasmosis which is a common organism rats are born with. When the rats are stressed, the immune system becomes unstable, weakens, and the rats become ill. Myco usually hits the respiratory tract first but can also cause illness elsewhere, from the urinary tract to ear infections and even uterine infections in females that are intact.  Baytril with doxycycline given for at least 21 days to prevent relapse (anything stopped sooner and a relapse is almost a guarantee) If the rat relapses, the chances the infection will become even stronger are almost a given. Pet store rats are not usually not bred for health unfortunately so its not shocking the new rats you bought are sick. I am glad you are taking care of them!
Any further questions you have can be done through a follow up. I hope they improve soon and this doesnt become chronic for them.

Regards

Sandra
