Putting Toffee to sleep :-(

Question
Hi Sandra

Thankyou for your reply to my last question. Im so sad :-( I wish she would understand that i was trying to do the best for her. She didnt bite me last night and licked the smoothie off my finger. She has stopped dribbling too. :-)
Ive phoned the emergency vet today and spoke to a nurse who said they use Pentobarbitone or Fentobarbitone. They usually inject an overdose of it into a vein which stops their heart. She said if they couldnt be held or struggle they sedate them first. If they cant find a vein they inject the pentobarbitone into chest or a kidney. Is that not good??
Im all confused now..what do i need to ask for? A full anesthetic(like when she has a tumour removed) and then a drug to stop her heart? Which one? If she is fully anesthetised is injecting into heart or kidney ok? If they dont anesthetise what do i do?

Thanks

Vicky

Answer
YOU FORCE THEM TO PUT HER UNDER TOTAL AND FULL ANESTHESIA!!!!!!

I hated to use all CAPS like that, but for other readers too....if it is done any other way. it is very painful.  I have heard horror stories about rats screaming loudly in pain because they felt the injection in their heart.  In the United States it is illegal to inject a lethal injection into a rat without it being totally under anesthesia. Sedation from any drug is not acceptable.  The rat must be under fully anesthesia.  If she still has that spark in her eye, please dont put her down.
