Porphyrin

Question
Hi Sandra,

I have two female rats who are about 5 months old.  I have had them not for three months and I have had no problems with either of them.  They get along well, although the play fight quite a pit.  About two days ago I noticed that one of them has some red mucus around her eyes which I found out was Porphyrin.  It wasn't very bad at the start, and it hasn't gotten much worse.  I read that it is normal to see it sometimes because it lubricates the eyes.  But I'm sure of how long it's suppose to last.  I changed they're food recently but I have started given them cereals and fruits with it, so I'm fairly certain that she is still eating.  She is active and playful and her behaviour hasn't changed since I noticed the porphyrin.

help?
Thanks

Answer
Emma, this going to be a wait and watch period for you. In two weeks you will be able to tell of this is something that needs the attention of a vet. Right now it could be a minor irritation in her eye caused by bedding. She sounds fine and healthy, but too much porphryn that won't stop is a sign of stress. You will be watching for the accumulation of more porphryn on the one eye, or both eyes, and/or the nose, and sneezing. If any of these occur please contact your vet because this will be the signs of Mycoplasmosis.
