Raising Baby Rats

Question
I rescued this pregnant mom rat from a snake breeding store and she gave birth a couple days ago. Two died today and the rest look really skinny, she seems to have stopped lactating, plus she does not sit on them much. What can I do to save the babies, there is now 12 babies left, the mom looks to be around 6 months old and in ok health. I don't think bottle feeding is a good idea, I tried that one time for two baby rats who were found on a construction site at approximately 1 week old and they died in two days. I am feeding the mom rat Mazuri Rat Blocks and I put Rat Vitamins in her water. She is in a 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot square cage and I am using Care Fresh Bedding.

Answer
It can be very difficult to raise baby rats on their own, especially when they are that young.  Sometimes the mother refuses to take care of them for reasons unknown; it's possible that the stress of moving to a new home made her not want to care for them.  I don't have much experience in this area myself, but I can offer you this link which is a great article on what to do: http://www.rmca.org/Articles/orphans.htm

Keep the mom in there, hopefully she will continue to help take care of them.  If you notice her acting hostile to them at all then you'll have to separate them.  Good luck!
