Question
QUESTION: I have a hairless rats that got sick and then over night developed a very swollen eye, so bad she could not close her eye lid.  I rushed her to the vet, vet thinks it could be a tumor?  I looked at the types of tumors suspected and didn't think that all the puzzle pieces fit.  or maybe wishfull thinking. Her eye looks flat like pancake.
It looks to me like an inner ear infection w/ puss behind the eye. Unless tumor with eye infection. I wish I had a picture for you but let me explain better- eye enlarged about 3-4 times larger than other eye, before that had trouble with balance, sniffles, cold chills, red eye and nose discharge. Eating and active, but get tired easy.  Next day after eye enlarged swelling around lower jaw and between eye and ear. vet gives three shots? swelling in eye goes down.  Right before this my other hairless dies of pnemonia?  saw wrong vet in that case? I think ?

ANSWER:
What type of shots did the vet use on your rat? It sounds like an abscess behind the eye and the eye should be removed.  This is common surgery and your rat can live just  fine with one eye. Hairless rats are super prone to eye problems due to the fact they have no eyelashes to protect them from debris getting in the eyes.  What has the vet done so far.....?

QUESTION: I was an ear infection, she's much better now except for head tilt that may be permanent. the shots she recived were antiflammitory and antihistamine. She's also on antibiotics. Swelling is completely down and she is a very happy rat.

ANSWER: Oh thats good news!  Look at me, all ready to have your poor rats eye taken out!!

Hope she is on the mend soon! Hopefully the tilt eases up. I have seen many that we thought were there for good ease up almost to near normal.  As long as she eats and drinks ok, the tilt wont bother her a bit.  In fact, its kind of cute :)   I have had several crooked little ratties:)

QUESTION: I thought the eye was a goner too. It looked like it was going to pop out any second. Please tell your your readers  how important a good vet is.  Dr. Fitzgerald saw my rats eye, My first rat was'nt so lucky.  You know that guy thats on animal planets emergency vets! He's great

Answer
Are you serious?  LOL  You must not read my questions/answers much or have never been to my website, Critter City.   Thats all I do is harp about vets.  Sadly, there are only about 25% of all the vets in the entire WORLD that know how to truly really take care of rats. From the fact that mycoplasma pulmonis  must be treated for at least 30 days with 6 weeks being the ideal and the second attack they should be treated for LIFE to proper surgery etc.....

Check out my website here:

http://www.freewebs.com/crittercity/

I have a page dedicated to finding the rat vet and also about surgical risks and complications etc..

Where are you located so I can tell people to see this Dr. Fitzgerald.
